First hand experience:
what matters to children

The day conference with workshops and further professional development days are designed to

  • promote first hand experiences for all children
  • examine some of the principles that are the basis of effective learning and teaching
  • aimed at all those who work with children aged 3-8 and beyond.

*The further professional development days with workshops are designed for those who have attended First hand experience: what matters to children conferences at the Science Learning Centre for the East of England (SLCEE) or elsewhere in the UK.

All days are underpinned by the principles of

  • first hand experience as a necessary and significant element in learning
  • intellectual engagement and emotional involvement: what matters to children
  • adult involvement in learning: what educators can do to provide, organise, and value worthwhile first hand experiences
  • children as powerful learners: people who think for themselves and who use their hands, eyes, ears, and their whole bodies to explore the world and everything and everyone in it
  • celebrating the diversity of the world’s resources and using them as a springboard for children's learning.
